Haiti Taking Action

Standard

Over the years Haiti has experienced the battering of tropical hurricanes and earthquakes undergoing severe-felt damage. CNN’s Philippe Cousteau and his team aim to uncover the environmental challenges many nations are battling. They stop in Haiti to see how locals are not only repairing the damages of severe hurricanes and earthquakes, but they are left inspired as locals show them how they are also trying to improve their way of living through being sustainable.

Haiti lies right on the hurricane belt in the Atlantic Ocean. This is where tropical depressions [mainly] develop off the eastern coast of Africa in to tropical storms and eventually hurricanes as it moves across water in a westwards/north west direction on the hurricane belt. In its way lies Haiti.

Not only enduring the inevitable destruction of hurricanes, they also experience earthquakes due to blind thrust faults. In January 2010 a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed 2% [200,000-250,000 people] of Haiti’s population out of 10 million. It was near the epicenter of its capital, Port-au-Prince.

Despite all their suffering Haitians are keeping their hopes alive by taking action.

Blue Flag awarded to Al Mamzar Beach Park & Jumeirah Open Beach

“By raising this flag, this means our beaches are complying with all international requirements from cleanliness, to safety, to the quality of water”said Hussain Lootah, Engineer and Director General of Dubai Municipality. He proudly led the ceremony on the 6th of July as Al Mamzar Beach Park and Jumeirah Open Beach both became the 1st and 2nd public beaches in the UAE to be certified as blue flagged beaches. They are 4th and 5th in the country as 3 private beaches have been accredited.

The Blue Flag, awarded by the Foundation Environmental Education, is a voluntary eco-label award

The Blue Flag, awarded by the Foundation Environmental Education [FEE], is a voluntary eco-label award

The Foundation for Environmental Education [FEE] awards blue flags to beaches and marinas around the world once they have met the 32 strict quality criteria deal including services such as Water Quality, safety and environmental services. It is a voluntary eco-label awarded to more than 3,850 beaches and marinas in over 48 countries around the world.

As the beaches get bigger and more popular with tourists, the more difficult it is to achieve and maintain the 32 strict criteria deal. The Dubai Municipality is proud to have its public beaches meet with international standards with hopes of not only attaining its award, but to keep the public safe from an unhealthy environment.`
